Benson Photography's Copyright Policy

Under American copyright law, a photographer owns the copyright to his work unless there is a written agreement to the contrary. Just as music, movies and software can be copyrighted, original photographs are protected, too.

An organization that hires Benson Photo is granted the legal right to use the resulting photographs for specific uses. For architectural photo shoots our clients typically receive the following rights: unlimited, non-exclusive use of the photographs in project sheets, proposals, in-house displays, portfolios, design awards, PowerPoint, public relations releases and their web site.

Use of the photographs by another organization is prohibited and a client cannot transfer their rights to the photographs to another organization, just as when you buy software, you cannot legally copy the software for another user. If someone else wishes to use the image commercially then they must contact Benson Photo to purchase a license to cover their intended use.

More information on copyright can be found at the US Copyright Office’s web site.
